Traditional presentations at academic conferences, which are essentially brief lectures, should go the way of the dinosaurs. We should replace them with "flipped" or "engaged" practices. //sarcasm
We wouldn't do this to each other; why do we insist on condescending to our students, then?
There may be compelling answers to this question. Are we infantilizing our students or are traditional college students demonstrably different in their mental capacities from professors? Is a semester-long course somehow different from an hour-long session?
