Social theorist René Girard has died. My introduction to Girard was a bit circuitous. I read a selection from Barbara Ehrenreich's Blood Rites when I took a Sociology of Religion course as an undergraduate and found it tranformative. Ehrenreich drew heavily from Girard's Violence and the Sacred so I eventually tracked that down and read it in graduate school. I've always been surprised at how many sociologists, and particularly sociologists of religion, are unaware of Girard and his work. I think our discipline would benefit from more of us reading his stuff.

UPDATE (11/6/2015): I also just learned that Girard is a fellow Indiana alumnus. Go Hoosiers!
