Friday Music: "I'm Just a Girl" - No Doubt

I give you No Doubt's "I'm Just a Girl":

In this song, Stephani, herself is a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, voices frustration with being oppressed as a woman in a patriarchal society. The video plays on the rumored differences between women's and men's restrooms and culminates in the band symbolically breaking down gender segregation by circumventing the structural (literal and figurative) constraints and jamming together in the women's room.

  1. At the time that the song came out, of course, Stefani was a nobody in a male-dominated industry. As an attractive female, she also received a lot more attention than the other band members, which is chronicled in the band's video for "Don't Speak".
